Edinburgh weather: Met Office issues warning as gale force winds expected

Edinburgh is forecasted for unsettled weather after residents and festival-goers were treated to a spectacular scene as lightning lit up the sky.

Following the thunderstorms on August 14, the heatwave has moved on and typical Scottish weather seems to have returned. While temperatures are still warm, showers are expected throughout the week.

The storms have cleared the air with temperatures only rising to 15C on Wednesday and sitting between 17C and 19C for the rest of the week. However Saturday will reach around 20C, although the Met Office forecasts showers throughout the day.

On Saturday, brisk winds are expected from 10am with gusts reaching up to 36 mph by 1pm.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Rudman said: “While there’s more detail to be determined into the weekend, the main theme for Saturday is unsettled spell of weather with some showers but also some sunny spells, while some gusty winds and more consistent rain could affect the northwest.

“Later in the weekend, and into early next week, a warm front is expected to move in from the Atlantic, which brings with it some further rain from the west, gradually spreading eastwards. The heaviest rain, and highest totals, are expected to be in western areas but as the front moves eastwards it should weaken, reducing any totals in these areas, and the southeast in particular could stay mostly dry.”

Looking towards towards the rest of August, unsettled conditions are expected to continue as the Met Office warns of a 'chance of possible gales.'

For the outlook for August 21-30, the Met Office forecast: "Showers remaining in the north on Sunday, but more general rain starting to move in from the west. Heavy bursts likely at times. Eastern areas may remain dry until late Sunday evening, western upslopes seeing the most of any persistent heavy rain.

"Winds generally light but becoming stronger with the arrival of rain, with a chance of coastal gales. Through this period, frontal systems likely to bring widespread rainfall. Rain across central and southern regions initially, could become more widespread to affect all parts for a time before becoming more settled.

Fine and dry conditions prevail for many areas. With winds light and plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures can be expected for this period, generally rising, feeling humid at times."
