Edinburgh weather: Met Office forecasts highs of 20C for capital but warns heavy rain will return

Edinburgh is set to enjoy a week of warm weather - with Tuesday expected to reach highs of 20C.

The Met Office says temperatures are high for this time of year.

They add that while parts of the UK will see temperatures reach 20C, showers are also forecasted with a yellow weather warning for thunder issued for parts of England and Wales.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page said: “The plume of warm air we have been expecting from the south will bring higher temperatures across the whole country over the next week.

"However, it looks like the effects from the Atlantic lows will prevent sustained high pressure building from the east. This means that while we might see some warm - and in places very warm – days, overall the next week will feel more like what we would expect of a warm spell in May, with some heavy showers around, rather than hot summery weather.”

While Edinburgh has been hit by rain over the last few days, Tuesday will bring sunshine through the morning and turn cloudy by 12pm, with the highest temperatures hitting at around 5pm.

But like the Met Office warned, heavy showers are expected to return by 9pm and fall through the night.

The Met Office forecast for : "Morning low cloud clearing then warm with sunny spells in east. Thickening cloud in west will bring some patchy rain towards midday, then turning heavy late-afternoon and spreading east later. Maximum temperature 22C."

For those with hay fever, it may be worth taking an antihistamine in the morning as the pollen count will be high until Thursday when it will drop to a 'medium' level.

Wednesday and Thursday is still expected to be warm but cloudy with temperatures reaching 18C and 17C.

Met Office forecast: "Bands of heavy overnight rain Tuesday night into Wednesday and Wednesday night into Thursday. Drier, bright and warm by day. Breezy at times."
