Edinburgh weather: Locals warned of 'extreme freeze' as temperatures plummet to -8

Edinburgh has woken up to an "extreme freeze" as weather forecasters predicts the temperature is unlikely to make it above freezing for most of the day.

The Met Office said wide areas of Scotland were likely to get down into double figures with sub-zero temperatures in the capital expected throughout the day.

Highs of just 1C are expected between 2pm before the mercury drops back below zero by 5pm.

It will be coldest first thing this morning, with temperatures of -5C from 6am onwards before it warms slightly to -2C by the afternoon.

But the feels like temperature could actually be closer to -8C if you are heading, so make sure to wrap up warm if you plan a visit to the shops.

Grahame Madge, a spokesman for the Met Office, said: "We're going to see colder temperatures tonight, whether we get down below (minus 22.3C) I doubt, but it will probably be a bit colder than Tuesday night," he said.

"The cold will begin to ebb away but it will be slow and quite erratic and there are still wintry hazards in the forecast.

"We've got potential for some more snow, heavy rain and also freezing rain."

No snow is currently forecast, and experts think the skies will remain clear with sunshine throughout the day.

It comes after the yellow warning for snow and ice which had been in place was finally lifted as Scotland was battered by Storm Darcy.

The capital was blanketed in heavy snow, leading to travel disruption on Wednesday.
