Edinburgh weather: Heavy rain and wind forecast as Met Office warns of gales across Scotland

Edinburgh is set to have heavy rain and moderate winds as we head into a new week.

Gale force winds have been forecast for the west and northern isles of Scotland and Edinburgh will also experience strong gusts through the day.

Edinburgh residents will want to wrap their scarves round tight as from 1pm on Monday January 10, winds will pick up speed to 29 miles per hour, reaching a strong 37 by 3pm.

From 4pm, the gusts will drop to 35 and 34 mph.

By 6pm, heavy rain is forecasted, according to the Met Office, and the gusts of wind will die down to 32 mph and through the evening they will decrease further.

Temperatures are higher than last week as a weather front sweeps across the east of Scotland.

The weather front brings mild temperatures with it reaching between 9°C and 10°C by 5pm, however it will 'feel like' 7°C.

Through the night however, the weather forecasters warn of frost as temperatures are expected to drop to around 4°C by 7am, although Edinburgh locals will be waking up feeling the chill as the clear sky will make it feel a lot colder and more like 2°C.

Looking towards the weekend, the Met Office forecast for the UK: "A continuation of largely settled conditions is most likely as we head into the middle of January with high pressure in charge across the south of the country. Most areas will be dry with any spells of rain and stronger winds likely to be restricted to northern parts of the country.

"The settled weather will bring widespread overnight frost as well as fog patches, these sometimes freezing. Amounts of sunshine are uncertain with areas of fog and low cloud potentially lingering all day in places, especially in the south. How long the predominantly settled conditions persist is uncertain with an increasing chance of some unsettled spells returning to many parts as we head towards the end of the period."
