Edinburgh weather: Flood warnings issued for the capital as snow melts

Edinburgh has been issued with a series of flood alerts as wet and windy conditions make their way over the capital.

In recent days, the city has accumulated a large amount of snow, most of which has remained due to freezing temperatures.

However, milder conditions over the next few days will see the majority of snow and ice begin to melt, causing great amounts of surface water.

In the last few hours, 15 flood alerts have been issued around Scotland, including Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Three flood warnings have also been issued for parts of Dumfries and Galloway.

The alert from SEPA stated: "On Monday and Tuesday strong winds and milder air are expected to become established across the area. Lying snow is expected to start melting at most levels and although no significant rainfall is expected, there is the potential for flooding from small watercourses and rivers.

"Any flooding impacts are most likely to include flooding to low-lying land and roads and individual properties. Surface water may also be an issue in low-lying areas especially if the ground remains frozen."

Over the next 24 hours, the Met Office has predicted a series of rain showers, as the city reaches temperatures of around six or seven degrees.

However, the night is forecast to be slightly milder, with a few light showers and heavy cloud cover. Winds are set to ease into the early hours, however warmer temperatures will allow the snow and ice to continue to melt.

Monday is set to be another cloudy day, with a "steady thaw" of lying snow. Anyone making an essential journey over the next few days has been asked to take extra caution due to lying surface water.
