Edinburgh weather: Council offers free sandbags to residents ahead of thunderstorm warning

The City of Edinburgh Council have offered free sandbags to all residents in the capital, ahead of the thunderstorm forecast for this afternoon.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning across the majority of Scotland, warning of extreme thundery showers, and flood alerts are in place across the country.

The warning begins from midday today, and will not be lifted until midnight tonight, but the forecasters at the Met Office have predicted that the heavy rain may continue over the next couple of days at least.

Posted on their Twitter page, the Council stated, "With thundery showers forecast this afternoon and overnight, there's a risk of localised flooding.

"To help you protect your property, there are free sandbags available at all Edinburgh fire stations (except McDonald Road) + advice on our website here: https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/flooding/flood."

Forecasters at the BBC have stated, "Thundery showers may lead to flooding and transport disruption.

"Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"Some communities might become cut off if roads flood, power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."

The rainfall warning will stay in place across Scotland until midnight on Thursday 29 July; and residents are advised to limit their travelling to a minimum, due to the threat of severe flooding.

In the event that you experience any flooding, you can check out the Met Office's advice on their website, here.
