Edinburgh weather: Capital set to be battered with 'icy' rain as 'early winter' strikes

Met Office forecasters are predicting a dramatic temperature plunge this week caused by La Nina, which takes place when the sea surface temperatures in central and eastern Pacific are below average.

According to the Met Office, Scotland is also set face an "early winter" in October, with temperatures to hover around and below the teens in Edinburgh all this week.

Brian Gaze, Weather Outlook forecaster, explained: “It looks like an early winter, with the cards stacked in favour of a cold second half of autumn due to La Nina."

He added: “-10C is expected in Scotland and -7C in England by late November, with snow on Scottish mountains now, in northern England from early November and the South at risk from late November.”

Today, (Tuesday 13) is also set to be "particularly cold" with the Met Office weather report predicting "longer spells of rain" and "minimum temperatures of 8 °C" this evening" in Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Alex Deakin, Met Office Meteorologist, said: “It’s going to feel cold most days this week but probably particularly cold on Tuesday thanks to a brisk and rather fresh wind blowing.

John Hammond of weathertrending added: “There's a good chance October and into November are chillier than normal.

"La Nina is one factor - arctic air means frost and early snowfall is more likely.

"And the coming week sees some raw days with temperatures in single figures in the North and East."
