Edinburgh weather: Capital hit with yellow weather warning starting tonight

Edinburgh and the Lothians are officially under a yellow weather warning for snow and ice starting from 18:00pm tonight (2 January), until 11:00am tomorrow (3 January.)

The Met Office are warning locals to take care when travelling as "roads and railways are likely to be affected" by the heavy snowfall and ice.

People are also being warned to take care to avoid "icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths" as they could cause injuries from slips and falls.

Edinburgh temperatures will plummet tonight to just 1 degree and we will wake up to temperatures of 2 degrees tomorrow.

In a statement, the Met Office said: "Icy patches are expected to develop, especially on untreated surfaces, where snow has fallen on Saturday and where showers are frequent this evening and overnight.

"Showers will also be wintry at times, mainly inland and particularly over higher ground where above 200-300m a further few centimetres of snow is possible in places."

Earlier this week reports suggested we could see the "most notable snow event for a decade" across the UK this winter.

Jim Dale, meteorologist for British Weather Services, said: "This is the greatest threat posed by the weather at this time of year since the big freeze of 2010/11.

"We are expecting a north-easterly and easterly feed with air coming in from Russia and the surrounding regions.

"This will bring some very low temperatures and snow, and overall, this is looking like the most notable snow event for a decade.

"So far snow has affected only some regions, but this will change over the next few days with more widespread, and at times heavy, wintry showers expected."
