Edinburgh weather: Capital could see rain and lower temperatures as heatwave comes to abrupt end

Edinburgh will be hit by rain from Thursday as the city's unseasonable heatwave comes to an abrupt end.

The capital has been enjoying warmer weather during lockdown, but forecasters warn the city, and most of the country, will be lashed by rain later this week.

The UK recorded one of its hottest ever Aprils, but temperatures could plummet to around 9C on Thursday, the Met Office says.

Snow is predicted in the north of the country.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: "Big changes are in store. A more active jet stream will introduce low pressure dominance from the North Atlantic. There will be rain for many and we will lose the sunshine as it turns cooler."

A warm Easter and April has led to temptation for many as groups flouted lockdown rules to visit beaches and country parks.

Police in East Lothian went out on quad bikes to quiz walkers, and found some had travelled long distances to take their daily exercises on the beach.

Met Office forecasters say Scotland can expect "remaining unsettled and mostly cloudy showers or longer spells of rain" from the end of this week.

From next week "more settled conditions may return," they report.
