Edinburgh weather as polar vortex set to bring snow and -11C temperatures to UK

A weather phenomenon is set to bring chill to the UK, with temperatures plummeting to -11C in some areas.

It comes as a major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) takes place, likely displacing the polar vortex. A polar vortex is a large region of cold, rotating air that surrounds the Earth's two polar regions, north and south.

Temperatures have been a little above average across Edinburgh during February so far. However, things are beginning to feel a little colder as temperatures struggle to stay above freezing throughout the capital overnight this weekend.

And the chilly conditions are set to continue, with a cold snap expected during the opening days of March.

British Weather Services' Jim Dale explained to the Mirror that models suggest the whole of the UK will be plunged into a freeze fr about a week, starting at the beginning of next month.

The expert expected average temperatures to lie around 7C or 8C, with the mercury plummeting to lows of around -10C in the Glens.

“There’s no reason we won’t be seeing those kinds of temperatures if the profile I’m expecting does eventuate", the expert said.

“Snow could well be involved, it certainly will be for Scotland and the chances are that will also be the case for a good part of the UK”, he added.

The Met Office long range forecast states that the first days of March bring an increased change of snow showers across many eastern and northern areas, with Edinburgh at risk for wintry showers.

The forecast also states will also continue feel cold, with temperatures remaining below average for the time of year after a near freezing conditions overnight during the final days of February.

The forecast reads: "For the rest of the period, high pressure is likely to migrate northwards, increasing the likelihood of colder, northerly winds across the UK, increasing the chance of snow showers for many eastern and northern areas. Temperatures to start below average in southern areas but increasing to around average through the period."
