Edinburgh weather as '800-mile-wide' snowstorm and sub zero temperatures heading for UK

While last week saw some milder temperatures across Edinburgh and the rest of the nation, it's not time to get the spring clothes out just yet.

A week of freezing temperatures and possible snow is on its way, reports the Mirror.

Forecasters have said that a "Greenland barrage" up to 800 miles wide will hit the north of the UK first, with snow expected in Edinburgh by Wednesday, February 22. A weather map, created by WXCharts, shows the snow hitting Edinburgh and other parts of the east coast this week, with even more wintry weather expected by next week.

The UK is set to be colder than the capital of Finland, Helsinki, as nights could get as chilly as -5C. Brian Gaze, a forecaster at The Weather Outlook, told the Daily Star: “Computer models show very cold air being pulled in from Wednesday, moving down from the north-west.

"It means the risk of snow returns, particularly for the North."

This news comes as Storm Otto swept the country on Friday, bringing winds as strong as 55mph to Edinburgh over the weekend.

Edinburgh Live reported at the time the weather warning has noted that a that there could be “injuries and danger to life from flying debris” and “some damage to building, such as tiles blown from roofs”.

Winds reached up to 80mph last week, with the Forth Road Bridge closed off to all traffic due to safety fears. More than 40,000 properties were left without power in Scotland, with around 7,600 still cut off as of 9pm on Friday.

Today's forecast

A rather cloudy but mostly dry day, aside from the odd outbreak of light rain or drizzle in the north at first. Chance of some bright or sunny spells developing during the afternoon. Winds easing through the day. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Tonight's forecast

Some clear spells at first this evening but turning increasingly cloudy through the early hours with a little light rain or drizzle in places. Minimum temperature 7 °C.

Tuesday's forecast

Another cloudy day but mainly dry for most tomorrow. Perhaps brightening up during the afternoon for a time. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday

Cloud and rain clearing eastwards Wednesday morning, with sunny spells behind. Cloudy with outbreaks of rain at times on Thursday. Mostly dry with sunny spells on Friday.
