Edinburgh weather: Amber 'extreme heat' warning continues for 'exceptionally hot' Tuesday

An amber warning for 'extreme heat' from the Met Office continues to remain in place for Edinburgh on Tuesday.

The warning will be in effect until 23.59pm tonight, and until then people are urged to take caution amid expected "adverse health effects" among the population. According to the forecaster, temperatures are expected to reach 29 degrees Celsius.

The Met Office states it will be "mainly dry with some spells of sunshine, areas of high cloud throughout the day". It adds: "A hot day, exceptionally so across Borders and Lothians, though starting to cool off towards evening."

Temperatures will be high starting from the morning, with the mercury reaching around 22C by 10am. Things will continue to heat up through the late morning and early afternoon, eventually hitting 28C at 4pm.

While it will be an "exceptionally" hot on Tuesday, it will not be an overly sunny day. Clouds will cover the city for much of the day, with only intermittent sunny spells forecast.

However, a high UV index means that you should wear adequate sun protection if you're heading out today. There will also be "moderate" levels of pollen, meaning those with hay fever may experience symptoms.

Looking ahead, temperatures will begin to cool off by 8pm, and by midnight they will have fallen to 21C. While things will be slightly cooler, it will still be a hotter than usual night, so some may struggle to sleep.

By Wednesday morning, temperatures will have fallen to 16C, and the amber weather warning will no longer be in effect. It will nonetheless be a warm day in the city, however, with expected peaks of 20C.

Dark clouds will hang over the city for much of the morning, but these will begin to clear up by the early afternoon. At around 7pm, skies will fully clear up for a bright and sunny evening.
