Network Rail plans to remove outdated navigational signs in Waverley Station before replacing them with interactive digital signage for both directions and general advertisement.
The additional revenue from new advertisements will be reinvested into the regional railway according to the planning application.
“Modern digital display signage has an important role to play in railway stations, providing vital information on train services, wayfinding around stations and local information like bus routes and station maps via the touchscreen,” said Network Rail planning application.
“This transformation to new technology is accompanied by a rationalisation of the amount of signage. It ensures stations are not cluttered and passengers will be able to find the most up-to-date information they need quickly. In particular, the removal of 5 roof-mounted cubes will open up views to the important glazed canopy roof. There will be no physical alterations to the building’s fabric.”

The proposed digital signage will use touchscreen features and the units will have in-built USB charging points.
Network Rail has proposed using seven single sided digital signs at platform level and six on the elevated walkway. Four double sided digital signs are proposed at platform level and one on the elevated walkway.
They plan to remove five of the navigation cubes on the roof, 13 wall mounted poster boxes, three wall directional signs, and two large format signs.
The proposal is part of a UK wide project within Network Rail’s managed stations to enhance customer experience and provide up-to date information on train services.
The planning application stated the project is meant to “rationalise and modernise current signage within the station” to improve the experience for station users.
According to the application, Edinburgh Waverley station is one of the largest stations in Britain and serves over 28 million people each year.
