Edinburgh VUE cinemas to show Queen's funeral free of charge as Odeon and Cineworld close

Edinburgh VUE cinemas will be showing the Queen's funeral free of charge on Monday, September 19.

In a statement on social media, VUE said that all UK venues are participating in the special broadcast, with guests being offered a complimentary bottle of water upon entry, although no additional snacks or drinks can be purchased.

They said: "On Monday 19 September, our UK venues will be screening the live broadcast of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

"Seats will be free of charge and our retail offering will be limited to complimentary bottled water during the broadcast, with no other snacks or drinks available for purchase. No other content will be shown on this day."

The announcement comes as a surprise after Odeon announced that their screens will be closed to the public on Monday, along with dozens of other businesses and supermarkets across the UK.

The two venues in Edinburgh that will be showing the funeral ceremony are VUE Omni Centre and VUE Ocean Terminal.

A statement from Odeon on the matter read: "As a mark of respect for Queen Elizabeth II all Odeon cinemas in the UK & Northern Ireland will be closed on Monday 19th September. We will re-open again on Tuesday 20th September."

On Tuesday evening, the Queen's body left Edinburgh for the final time after being transported from St Giles' Cathedral to Edinburgh Airport, where it boarded an RAF Globemaster aircraft to London to lay rest at Buckingham Palace.
