More than a quarter of a million people voted at polling stations across Edinburgh during Thursday's 2019 General Election.

Turnout figures for the Scottish capital have revealed that more than 70 per cent of the city's population made their choice at the ballot box. The percentage is almost identical to that of the 2017 General Election.

The area with Edinburgh's largest turnout, by per cent, during yesterday's was in Edinburgh South where Labour's Ian Murray won. A total of 49,732 people voted in this area, 75.1 per cent of the population.

Next was Edinburgh North and Leith where 73 per cent of people turned out, with 59,344 votes cast. Deidre Brock of the SNP won this seat comfortably.

In Edinburgh South and West, where Joanna Cherry won, there was a turnout of 70.9 per cent, amounting to 50,428 voters.

Edinburgh East saw 68.9 per cent of people head to their local polling station – amounting to 47,815 votes cast – with Tommy Sheppard winning for the SNP there.

And in Edinburgh West, where Christine Jardine of the Lib Dems was elected, the voter turnout was 66.4 per cent with 54,533 people heading to the ballot.

Throughout the night we at Edinburgh Live ran a blog with all the latest updates, news and results from the 2019 General Election.
