Edinburgh volunteers pluck Glock pistol from Water of Leith in terrifying find

A Glock pistol has been handed into the police after local Edinburgh volunteers plucked it out of the Water of Leith.

The weapon was found on July 21, at around 1:20pm, by members of the Water of Leith Conservation Trust. The group handed the pistol into a nearby police station after they found it lying on the riverbed.

Images of the find were posted to Twitter by the group, showing the weapon under the Water at the Water of Leith near Warriston. The pistol seems to have been in the water for some time, as it is covered in green moss from the water.

Those who found the weapon confirmed that it must have been there for a while, saying: “It had been in the river for a while so everything was fairly well seized” after one person commented that it must have been a scary walk to the police station carrying a weapon.

The Water of Leith Conservation Trust said on social media: “A day of contrasts down at the Rocheid path today for our staff.

“From a peaceful wade for invasive species whilst being watched by the chess men of the path.

“Then a visit to Gayfield Police station to drop off a recovered firearm from the river.

Never the same day twice.”

The police confirm that the weapon has since been made safe and they are conducting enquiries into the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called to a report of a firearm found in the Water of Leith in the Warriston area of Edinburgh at 1.20pm on Thursday 21 July, 2022.

“The firearm has been made safe and further enquiries are ongoing.”
