Edinburgh vigil for Sarah Everard cancelled due to lockdown restrictions as event moves online

The Edinburgh 'Reclaim the Streets' vigil has been cancelled and moved to a virtual-only event.

Following the murder of Sarah Everard in London this week, hundreds of women had decided to gather in a peaceful vigil to remember the 33-year-old and stand against violence against women.

Originally to take place on Saturday (March 13), two Edinburgh sites were to be used for people to gather in a socially distant manner, however they have now been cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions.

The guidelines in place across Scotland do not permit any kind of outdoor gathering of more than four people from two different households.

Today, Edinburgh organisers of the Reclaim the Streets vigil and others around the UK have confirmed that the event will now be online only.

They have now told women not to gather at St Andrews Square or Holyrood, with a live broadcast to take place instead.

Describing the decision as "frustrating", Edinburgh organiser Chloe Whyte said:

"Following the decision of the High Court in London & comments from @JeaneF1MSP, we have decided to build upon events currently being hosted online and cancel our in-person gatherings.

"This is a moment of reflection, but also one of action. The conversation must not end tomorrow.

"While this is incredibly frustrating, we deeply appreciate the platform that has been given to survivors of sexual harassment and violence this week."

The online livestream will take place at 6pm, with guests to share their experiences, and all attendees asked to put a candle in their window or doorstep to remember Sarah Everard.

The 33-year-old was confirmed to have been murdered this week after going missing walking home near Clapham on March 3.

A serving police officer has now been arrested and charged with her murder.
