Edinburgh veteran JJ Chalmers claims those who fought in Afghanistan 'did what they could'

Edinburgh veteran JJ Chalmers gave an emotional message to others who had served in Afghanistan this week, as the Taliban continue to take over the country.

The well-known TV and Strictly Come Dancing star took to social media on Monday, as horrifying scenes of people trying to flee the new regime were broadcast worldwide.

A serving Royal Marine, JJ was one of many British soldiers who were critically injured from their time serving in the Helmand province, after he was caught by a roadside bomb.

After heading out to Afghanistan in March 2011, Chalmers had only been two months into his six month tour when he sustained life-changing damage to his legs and arms, and was rushed back to hospital in the UK.

Lucky to survive the brutal attack, he then underwent around 30 operations to rebuild his limbs, as well as months of gruelling physiotherapy.

This week, as many veterans and their families watched the scenes unfold where they had worked so hard to make progress, JJ reassured others that they had done "what they could".

In an emotional post, he wrote: "I have started and deleted many tweets about Afghanistan in the last few weeks, ultimately knowing words mean nothing.

"I have been awash with emotions, none of them good. But ultimately this isn't about me, it's about the Afghan people.

"All I can think I can really say is... sorry.

"This sorrow though is not for my own actions. So, I would urge all veterans who I know will be feeling heartbroken and at a loss to know they did what they could.

"Now more than ever we must look out for one another, just as we did out there.
