Edinburgh van driver slapped with fine after demolishing bus stop in crash

A capital driver has been slapped with a fine after smashing through a bus stop on a quiet Edinburgh street.

The shelter on Belford Road was reduced to rubble on Wednesday afternoon after the vehicle left the road and crashed into the structure, sending shattered glass and debris sprawling across the roadside.

Eyewitnesses told of an ‘ear-splitting thump’ when the van demolished the stop - which thankfully had no passengers waiting to board local bus services.

Police cordoned off part of the road leading onto the nearby Belford Bridge while recovery vehicles were dispatched to retrieve the white van and the pavement was made safe for pedestrians.

No injuries were reported, however, officers confirmed the motorist involved had received a fixed penalty notice for road traffic offences as a result of the incident.

Certain bus services, including the Edinburgh coach lines number 13, were delayed following the crash.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1.50pm on Wednesday, 22 December, officers were called to the Belford Road area of Edinburgh, following a report of a van crashing into a bus shelter.

"There were no injuries reported and recovery was arranged. One man has been issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice in connection with road traffic offences.”
