Edinburgh v Cardiff match halted for several minutes as James Botham treated amid concerning scenes

Wales and Cardiff Rugby back-rower James Botham was stretchered from the field amid concerning scenes after taking a knock to the head.

Dai Young's men were in action against Edinburgh in Saturday afternoon's fixture when the head-on-head incident happened in the third quarter of the game.

The 23-year-old No. 8 took a bang to the head from Edinburgh replacement hooker Dave Cherry at a ruck around the 56-minute mark, with Cherry connecting with Botham in clearing out at a ruck.

There was a lengthy delay, with the match halted for around five minutes as the Cardiff man received treatment from medics on the field. He was then stretchered off the field on a buggy with oxygen, receiving applause from those inside the fan-empty stadium.

A number of people on social media have questioned why the incident was not looked at by the officials.

Players from both sides offered him support before he was taken from the field.

Botham later confirmed he had undergone the necessary checks to be cleared to travel back to Cardiff with the rest of the squad, and also thanked supporters for their messages.

In a post-match update, Botham said: "I've had all the relevant investigations and have been cleared to travel home with the team. I couldn’t thank Edinburgh [and] NHS Lothian enough for all care".

He added: "Thank you to everyone for the messages it means a lot."

The match ended 34-10 to the home side.
