Edinburgh University students with surnames Gillies or Carmichael can get free money

There's no greater joy when living as a cash-strapped student than finding an extra tenner in your purse or wallet.

Now, imagine there had been a whole bursary available to you...just because you had a certain surname.

Youth news site The Tab reported that Edinburgh University is giving away free money to students with the last names Gillies or Carmichael.

The prestigious university offers a number of undergraduate awards, however the Gillies-Carmichael Bursary is unique in that allocation is not based on a student's financial situation, social background or degree.

The only requirement for applying to get free money is that you must be in second year or above and have one of the two surnames.

A description of the award on the Edinburgh University website reads: "Awarded annually to undergraduates in second or later years bearing the surname of Carmichael or Gillies, and regardless of study discipline.

"The level of the award is dependent on academic progress in the previous year."

A student who benefited from the bursary told The Tab that they are set to receive a £600 payment.
