Edinburgh University students campaign to rename building after Bake Off winner Peter Sawkins

Proud students at Edinburgh University are lobbying for a campus building to be renamed after the first Scot to win Bake Off - who studies there.

Pete Sawkins, 20, became both the youngest person to win the Great British Bake Off and also the first Scot, on Tuesday night.

The finance and accounting student, who made gingerbread with haggis, and a cake version of cycling legend Chris Hoy, won viewer's hearts - as well as those of fellow uni students.

Now a petition has been started in a bid to get a building named after Pete - deemed to be a less controversial name for a building than the much-maligned David Hume Tower.

The petition has so far got 123 signatures.

It said: "With everything going on in the world at the moment one thing that has excited and brought the nation together is Bake Off on a Tuesday night.

"For those living in Scotland and Edinburgh seeing Peter win star baker on the first week was amazing.

"As much as we wanted him to win and dared to dream, the excitement when his name was announced as winner was unrivalled.

"Tears of joy and a feeling of joy. This is why we believe it is only right that Peter gets recognised for this.

"At Edinburgh University buildings are named after influential people from the university.

"We see no one as influential as the first Scottish winner and youngest ever winner of Bake off.

"It is an honour to say that you go to the same Uni as him.

"Therefore it is only right that his win is rightly recognised and acknowledged through the naming of a building after him.

"Forget David Hume Tower, we want Peter Sawkins Showstopper."
