Edinburgh University could refuse deferrals despite students trapped in lockdown uncertainty

Edinburgh University has said they won't be able to offer everyone a year off, despite the pandemic causing complete uncertainty over whether some students would even be able to enter the country.

According to The Tab, Edinburgh University confirmed that they would only allow "limited" students to take a year out and instead say they are "looking forward" to teaching students "wherever they are in the world."

Some of the courses offered at Edinburgh University cost international students upwards of £33k and many students fear they will be paying for "barely any face-to-face teaching" as the University can not yet confirm if it will be safe to reopen and many countries still have travel bans.

The National Union of Students say that students should have their deferral requests granted in light of everything going on.

NUS Scotland President Liam McCabe told Edinburgh Live : "In light of the disruption and uncertainty facing students across the country, we believe Scottish institutions should seek to accommodate student requests for deferral of study.”

A spokesperson for Edinburgh University said: “The University of Edinburgh will be open and ready to teach at the start of the new academic year, delivering high-quality education to our students.

"The safety of our staff and students is our key priority.

"Students who wish to defer their applications for either undergraduate or postgraduate study can apply to do so and will have their situation considered on a case by case basis.

"Undergraduate deferral decisions will be made from mid-June and the University will also be in touch with postgraduate applicants in June with an update on their deferral."
