Edinburgh tributes flood in for rugby club stalwart and 'true legend' Barry Sinclair

Tributes have poured in for local rugby legend Barry Sinclair after his death was announced on Tuesday.

Described as a "stalwart" of Portobello Rugby Club, Barry had been involved with the team for 52 years, and was widely known by the Edinburgh and Lothians community.

Dedicated to the sport and to Portobello RFC, Barry had most recently been appointed as Secretary of the club, but had spent the majority of his life at Cavalry Park supporting the team.

During his life, Barry had also been elected to sit on the Scottish Rugby Council, as well as the East Championship.

In a tribute to him on Tuesday (December 7), Portobello RFC described Barry as a "true legend."

They said: "We are beyond saddened to report the death of Barry Sinclair, the heartbeat of Portobello FP RFC for over 50 years.

"Everyone within the East region, and probably further Scottish rugby will have a story with Barry in it, so we’ll regarded in the game as he was.

"A true Mr Porty, he will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of being in his company.

"Our thoughts are with his whole family at this sad time. A true legend lost."

The words from Portobello were quickly mirrored by other sports teams and clubs who had worked with or met Barry over the years. Speaking on social media, Broughton Rugby Club said: "We are saddened to learn of the passing of Barry Sinclair. Our thoughts are with the Sinclair family & everyone involved at Porty in what has been the most challenging of years."

Condolences were echoed by Penicuik RFC, who said: "Our thoughts go out to all the Porty RFC family following the awful news of the passing of Barry Sinclair.

"A Club Stalwart at Cavarly Park since 1969, Barry also served on the East Championship committee.Thinking of the Sinclair family at this difficult time."

Local residents also shared their memories of Barry, with one writing: "Unbelievable news , RIP Barry ,you will be missed and fondly remembered by a whole lot of rugby clubs , was a pleasure to know you , a tremendous stalwart of Portobello RFC."

Another said: "A true gentleman that always had time for a chat about the game. Many memories of him when we played at Porty over the years. RIP Barry."
