Edinburgh travel: Almost 20 per cent of ScotRail services will be cut from tomorrow

Almost 20 per cent of ScotRail services will be cut from tomorrow (Sunday).

The travel operator is asking people to check before they travel as a raft of timetable changes come into force.

They say the revised schedule is being implemented due to a reduction in passenger demand during the Covid-19 pandemic. The number of people using their services is down by around 85 per cent compared to this time last year.

81 per cent of services will continue to run across Scotland, with 19 per cent cut out from their timetable.

ScotRail say there's been a shift away from people traveling during the peak times of 7am to 9am, and 4.30pm to 6.30pm, with working from home arrangements a big factor.

David Simpson, ScotRail Operations Director, said: “Throughout the pandemic, everyone across Scotland’s Railway has worked tirelessly to deliver a robust and reliable timetable, with services across the country keeping key workers moving.

“This revised timetable allows us to continue delivering that reliable and vital rail service, but better reflects the reduced demand and changing nature of travel in Scotland and the need to ensure value for taxpayer money.

“Fewer people are travelling during the morning and evening peaks because of more flexible work arrangements. Our targeted approach will deliver more than enough seats to allow customers to travel safely.

“Our staff have done a fantastic job in an unprecedented environment for the rail industry. This revised timetable will mean we are better placed to manage any reduction in staff availability due to coronavirus restrictions.”

Changes had already been made to the network in Edinburgh, with services between the Scottish capital and Glasgow operating every half an hour rather than 15 minutes.

ScotRail also say students heading home for Christmas can get 50 per cent off any off-peak ScotRail service between now and 24 December.

Services from Edinburgh to Fife, Edinburgh to Tweedbank and Glasgow to Edinburgh will be affected. Check out the ScotRail website for full details on how your journey is affected.
