Edinburgh trams to Newhaven project extends with further road closures

Work on the latest phase of the Edinburgh Trams project is set to expand from Monday morning with the closure of several access routes.

Parking and unloading provision on Kirk Street and Cassels Lane is set to be suspended from November 6 under a temporary traffic regulation order (TTRO) to allow for work to continue.

Vehicle access to the area and nearby Casselbank Street will be maintained from Leith Walk for southbound traffic only in the form of a right turn to Kirk Street.

The long-running Trams to Newhaven scheme is due to be completed in 2022 after shutting down large sections of Leith Walk to traffic.

Motorists will be able to exit the area via a right turn onto southbound traffic on to Leith Walk, while a left turn on to Great Junction Street is also to be maintained.

No access to Duke Street is available under the new round of traffic management procedures.

Currently, the existing tram line ends at York Place, however works have been going on for some time in both Newhaven and Leith to connect the service further.

A Trams to Newhaven project statement read: "Pedestrian footpaths on the west side of Leith Walk will always be maintained with local diversions as and when required to carry out works. All pedestrian diversions will be properly signposted and available for use by all.

"These arrangements are expected to be in place until further notice with updates being communicated via the project communications channels."
