Edinburgh Trams set to close key section of rail line for 'essential repairs'

A SECTION of tram line in Edinburgh is set to temporarily close for essential repairs, it has been announced.

Edinburgh Trams have revealed that services will not run between Picardy Place and Haymarket to make way for the replacement of track points at Shandwick Place.

The essential works will begin on Saturday, September 27, and continue until the end of service on Monday, September 29.

The line operator confirmed that during the three days of scheduled work tram stops at St Andrew Square, Princes Street and West End will be closed.

However, Edinburgh Trams said that services on either side of the closure, between Edinburgh Airport and Haymarket, and Newhaven and Picardy Place, will continue to run.

A ticket acceptance agreement on certain Lothian Buses and Scotrail services is in place to help minimise disruption, the tram operator said.

Tram tickets will be accepted on the following services:

Lothian Buses

  • Service 4 between Haymarket (Dalry Road) and Leith Street
  • Service 25 between Haymarket (Dalry Road) and Leith Street
  • Service Airlink 100 from Waverley Bridge to Airport (not from Airport)

ScotRail

  • All ScotRail train services from Haymarket to Waverley Station.

Marilena Papadopoulou, Edinburgh Trams head of projects and renewals, said staff will be on hand at key locations and at closed stops throughout the temporary shutdown to help customers.

She said: “These works are part of a wider programme of asset renewals which allow us to maintain and modernise the system, and we’re doing all we can to keep the city moving once they are underway.

“Members of our team will be on hand at key locations and at closed stops throughout the temporary shutdown to help customers complete their onward journeys.

“We ask customers to allow a little extra time for their journeys and would like to thank them in advance for their understanding while we undertake these necessary works.”
