Edinburgh trains set for disruption over weekend as work carried out on lines

National Rail have reported that there will be severe travel disruption this weekend on lines connecting the North East of England with the South East of Scotland.

Engineering work is taking place on Saturday and Sunday between Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed.

As a result several lines have been impacted and travellers are advised to look at alternative arrangements - such as buses between Newcastle and Edinburgh - that have been provided for those impacted.

The CrossCountry service between Penzance and Glasgow Central will be disrupted due to work on lines between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

The same is true for the LNER service between London Kings Cross and Glasgow Central as well as for the TransPennine Express between Liverpool Lime Street and Edinburgh.

The Northern service between Carlisle-Newcastle and Chathill will also be disrupted over the weekend.

However, the CrossCountry services will be replaced by a bus between Newcastle and Edinburgh in both directions.

With LNER operating an hourly service to and from Scotland diverted via Carlisle with journey times extended approximately by two hours.

Other services between the North and London will start and terminate at Newcastle with some services cancelled altogether.

Lincoln and Hull services are cancelled and Harrogate services will start and terminate at Leeds.

A rail replacement coach service will be provided between Newcastle, Morpeth, Alnmouth, Berwick, Dunbar and Edinburgh.

On Monday morning the 05.38 service from Sunderland and the 06.00 service from Berwick will start from Newcastle.

The TransPennine Express service has stated that for Saturday:

The 07:24 Liverpool Lime Street to Edinburgh will terminate at Newcastle.

The 10:22 Edinburgh to Newcastle will not run.

The 12:33 Edinburgh to Newcastle will not run.

The 14:21 Newcastle to Edinburgh will not run.

And for Sunday:

The 09:19 York to Edinburgh will terminate at Newcastle.

The 10:20 Edinburgh to Newcastle will not run.

The 12:23 Edinburgh to Newcastle will not run.

The 14:41 Newcastle to Edinburgh will not run.

National Rail has advised that travellers check before leaving the home to ensure that their services have not been disrupted and have asked that people use the National Rail Enquiries Journey Planner where possible.

On replacement bus travel advice, they said: “For helpful advice if you need to travel on a rail replacement service, including accessibility and bicycle information, please use this page.

“And you can find the location of your bus replacement by checking station signs or by searching for your station on our station information pages.
