Edinburgh trains affected as person dies after being hit by train on busy line

Edinburgh trains have been affected following the death of a person who died after being hit by a train on a busy railway line on Monday morning.

All lines were closed between Aberdeen and Dundee until around 9am after the incident happened near Montrose. All East Coast trains from Edinburgh to Aberdeen have been affected.

Emergency services raced to the scene after the alarm was raised at around 5.30am on Monday morning. Network Rail said train services may be cancelled or diverted as a result.

Ambulance crews attended but the person was pronounced dead at the scene. British Transport Police are not treating the death as suspicious and confirmed a report would be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Network Rail said: "A person has been hit by a train between Aberdeen and Dundee. As all lines are currently closed, trains may be cancelled or diverted until approximately 9am".

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to the line in Aberdeen at 5.31am on June 19 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

They continued: "Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal.”

Routes affected include the Caledonian Sleeper between Aberdeen and Edinburgh, the Aberdeen and Dundee/Penzance CrossCountry and the LNER train between Aberdeen and London King's Cross.
