Edinburgh train strikes: LNER urges customers to avoid travel as services to city slashed

Train services across the UK are set to be disrupted once more as members of Aslef union are striking on Saturday July 30.

This comes as train and railway staff are in a dispute over pay, job security and working conditions and a number of strike days have been announced throughout August, set to cause severer disruption. Train operators are urging people not to travel by train and consider other modes of transport.

LNER tweeted urgently, telling its customers to avoid travel as the strikes are set to bring many trains to a standstill, with only a limited amount of LNER services running to Edinburgh while none will run to Glasgow or further north of Scotland. This comes just days after 40,000 RMT members walked out on Wednesday, bringing the majority of trains in the country to a complete halt as Network Rail Scotland staff took part in industrial action.

Staff from nine railway companies will taking part in the strike on Saturday, coinciding with the Commonwealth Games and he first day of the English Football League season. Customers are also warned to expect disruption on Sunday in the wake of the strike.

Train companies affected

The train companies affected by Saturday's strikes are;

  • Arriva Rail London
  • Great Western
  • LNER
  • Greater Anglia
  • Southeastern
  • Hull Trains
  • West Midlands Trains

Next train strike days

Following Saturday's strike action, there is another date set with Aslef members and the nine train companies, including Avanti West Coast and Cross Country. This will take place on August 13.

On August 18 and 20, severer disruption is expected to hit railways across the country again as RMT members, along with Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA), are striking.

This will include signallers and Network Rail Scotland staff and so we can expect limited ScotRail trains to run in Scotland. During previous strike days where RMT members are included, only five services were able to run in the central belt, leaving the rest of the country without trains.

Is ScotRail staff striking?

ScotRail staff are not taking part in these strikes as a pay deal was met earlier in July. However, when Network Rail Scotland staff strike, this includes signallers who are crucial in the safety and running of the trains across the country. Without them, services grind to a halt.
