Edinburgh train passengers facing travel chaos as flooding shuts main route

Edinburgh rail passengers are facing travel chaos after a busy cross country route has been closed for the rest of the day due to heavy rainfall.

The line between Edinburgh and Newcastle has been experiencing major disruption all day, with LNER also advising customers to avoid travelling on that particular route.

CrossCountry trains have also issued a statement on social media saying that their services have been cancelled as heavy rainfall continues to cause travel chaos across eastern Scotland.

They said: "No CrossCountry services will be running between Edinburgh and Newcastle for the rest of today. Coaches are running but they're very few and far between with large queues at Edinburgh and Newcastle. If you decide not to travel, you can get a full refund."

Network Rail has been working hard to re-open the line between Edinburgh and Newcastle and have shared images of the flood that is seemingly causing most of the delays. Water can be seen spewing out of an overflowing drain and onto the track as only one line is currently in operation.

Users on Twitter have also reported huge amounts of stranded passengers waiting at Newcastle to get to the capital. On LNER's site it states: "Flooding between Newcastle and Edinburgh means all lines are currently blocked. As a result of this, trains running between these stations may be cancelled, severely delayed by up to 100 minutes or revised.

"Major disruption is expected until the end of the day."

One passenger travelling from Edinburgh to King's Cross earlier in the day filmed their train wading slowly through water that left the tracks completely covered by water.
