Edinburgh train disruption as embankment damage near Aberdeen leaves services cancelled

Passengers planning to travel on ScotRail services have been warned of major disruption after railway embankment damage between Laurencekirk and Stonehaven left services cancelled.

Both rail lines to Aberdeen are currently closed whilst engineers work to repair the damage, ScotRail said.

All services from Edinburgh Waverley to Aberdeen have been cancelled for the rest of the day on Friday (January 15), and no bus replacement services have been announced so far.

A message from the rail operator says: "Our staff are onsite and are working hard to assess the damage.

"Services between Edinburgh and Aberdeen are cancelled.

"Services between Edinburgh and Arbroath run as scheduled."

Network Rail said on Friday morning: "We've received reports that there's damage to an embankment near Laurencekirk, and we've had to close the line.

"Engineers have been dispatched, and are expected to arrive on-site shortly."
