Edinburgh traffic chaos on Royal Mile as cars ignore 'road closed' signs and cones

An Edinburgh local hit out tonight after cars were pictured ignoring road closed signs and cones on Royal Mile.

The man contacted Edinburgh Live after becoming frustrated at the volume of vehicles simply ignoring the signage and carrying on down the closed High Street.

Parts of the city-centre are currently closed for road works, including the Tram to Newhaven project and other works.

The man took to Twitter and shared videos of cars wilfully ignoring the signs and driving down the street until it is blocked off.

At this point the footage shows the vehicles having to retrace their steps and reverse back up the street.

One white car is pictured slowly reversing back up the street and struggling to turn on the narrow road.

Two cars sit at the bottom of the road in one of the videos and two women are seen approaching the cars and one says "the road is closed - and the is a big sign up there"

The local man then mentioned that the drivers had been driving around in this manner for over a week now.

He said: “This could keep me entertained all night. People just ignoring road closed signs to try to drive down the Royal Mile.

"It’s actually unbelievable.

He continued: “There’s been loads this afternoon. People are getting out of cars at the top and physically moving cones and signs. Contractors have been out twice to restore the closure yet more come along. It’s been happening all week but normally late at night.”

Stay tuned to Edinburgh Live for all the latest traffic and travel reports across the week.
