Edinburgh tower block fire as up to 30 firefighters scrambled to high rise

Fire crews have rushed to the scene of a flat blaze on a busy residential street in Leith as neighbours bailed from their flat block.

Six appliances including a high reach ladder were scrambled to Spey Terrace shortly after 10pm on Sunday evening to respond to a fire in a high rise block of flats.

Up to 30 firefighters responded after panicked calls from locals who saw smoke billowing from the building, with locals quickly rushing out of the nine-floor block.

Scottish Fire and Rescue (SFRS) staff confirmed crews were still tackling the blaze more than an hour after it was first reported at 10:19pm.

Ambulance crews have also responded to the incident to treat one person for smoke inhalation.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos as residents fled the building.

One said: "I came out of my flat and I saw firefighters running up the stairs in masks pointing downwards so I just headed that way."

Bystanders watched on as firefighters leapt into action, unfurling hoses as smoke billowed from the block.

One witness said he though the fire had started in a third floor flat.

"I think the guy is away but I could hear a dog barking," he said.

An SFRS spokesperson said: "Six appliances have responded an incident on Spey Terrace.

"We are continuing our operation."
