Edinburgh today - Suzanne Pilley's ex charged and eco-village plan scrutinised

Morning Edinburgh!

The ex-lover of missing Edinburgh office worker Suzanne Pilley has been charged with murder.
The Guardian's Severin Carrell reports.

The Herald reports that plans for a 3500 home eco-village, garden centre and sport stadium on Edinburgh's green belt have been put forward by Scottish entrepenuer and Ranger's majority shareholder Sir David Murray.

The site, near to Ratho on the western edge of the city, would include a giant garden complex called the "Calyx", which would showcase sustainable gardening methods, and a 25,000 seat sports stadium.

But environmental blogger Suitably Despairing takes issue with the plans, saying that they are anything but green.

"I'm appalled that Murray thinks he can get away with building on Green Belt land by pretending that this housing estate will be "green", just because everyone will have a garden and encouraged to grow their own veg.

If he really wanted to build low-cost, sustainable housing - in fact, forget the low-cost, if he merely wanted to just build sustainable housing - then there are plenty of brown-field sites in and around Edinburgh begging to be turned into something useful and not just another hotel."

Scotland's biggest LGBT pride march, Pride Scotia will be held tomorrow. The event is held to celebrate LGBT life in Scotland, to campaign for greater rights, including the right to marriage, and to have some fun!

The Pride March will start outside the City Council Offices in East Market Street, at 1:30. It will then progress down the Royal Mile, passing the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood House, up Abbeymount, along Royal Terrace, up Leith Walk and will terminate at the Omni Centre where there will be more speeches and entertainment.

You'll find a full programme of events and details of the route of the march here.

Fancy learning how to grow your own veg, but don't want to wait years for an allotment space? Edinburgh Community Back-greens Association, which encourages people in the capital to make better use of their green spaces, is holding a six week beginners course starting tomorrow into how to make and grow veg in a raised bed. It aims to show that you can grow your own, even if you only have a small bit of space. The course is at 2pm-5pm at the Sunshune on Leith gardens on Dixon Street, and costs £60 for six weeks.

Tommorrow is also the second Edinburgh Canal Festival with music, stalls and activities, organised by the Re-union Canal Boat Charity. This year the community festival, which includes a colourful raft race, event will be opened by crime author and nearby resident Ian Rankin.

If you're heading to Pride Scotia, or the Canal Festival, why not share your pics with Guardian Edinburgh's flickr pool? And if have news, views or an event to share, please feel free to add it in the comments below or contact us by email.
