Edinburgh today: ash cloud, portrait gallery preview and Chris Brookmyre's new book

Good morning Edinburgh.

Would-be air passengers left Edinburgh Airport disappointed last night after the airspace above parts of Scotland was closed due to volcanic ash. No doubt some will be making their way back to try again today. It is set to be the third day of what today's Scotsman calls travel chaos. The advice is to check the airport's Twitter feed and website for updates.

The council's planning committee meets at 10am today. More than ten new phone mast applications make up the bulk of the agenda, which you can see here.

The Queensferry lifeboat team are looking for feedback on their tweets.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery threw its doors open to a few special guests yesterday. Naturally a special guest as the area's long-standing independent publication, the Broughton Spurtle has its report here on the two year £17.6m renovation.
