Edinburgh to London train services to be cut over next two months due to staff shortages

Edinburgh to London trains will be cut over the next two months it has been announced.

The train operator Avanti West Coast were forced to cut their timetable due to staff shortages caused by Covid-19.

Avanti’s reduced timetable started last week on January 7 and the restrictions will last until at least the end of February.

The hourly service between London and Birmingham, with an an onward service to Edinburgh will now run only once every two hours each day.

It will leave from Euston and call at Watford Junction, Milton Keynes, Rugby, Coventry, Birmingham International, Birmingham New Street, Sandwell and Dudley, Wolverhampton, Crewe, Warrington, Wigan, Preston and Edinburgh.

Additionally, they announced an hourly Service between London and Glasgow, calling at Crewe, Warrington, Wigan, Preston, Lancaster, Oxenholme/Penrith and Carlisle.

However, Avanti say that any customers planning to travel during this time period should always check National Rail Enquiries in the first instance to see if your train is running.

If your train has been cancelled, you can use your ticket on the train before or after your original booked service. Advanced tickets are amendable and cancellable if you decide not to travel.

ScotRail announced similar plans for Scottish services travelling to Edinburgh earlier this month.

David Simpson, ScotRail Operations Director, said: “Like most businesses, ScotRail is not immune to the impact of coronavirus. We’ve been working flat out to run a safe and reliable railway in really difficult and rapidly changing circumstances.

“As we continue to battle against the impact of coronavirus, we want to provide customers with a level of certainty, which is why we are introducing some temporary changes to our timetable from Tuesday, 4 January until Friday, 28 January 2022.

“We’ve looked to spread these changes out across the day where possible to minimise the impact on our customers, but people should plan ahead and continue to check the train times right up until they arrive at the station.

“We urge anyone travelling with us to stay safe and continue to follow government guidance. This includes maintaining good hand hygiene and wearing a face covering for your entire journey.”
