Edinburgh to be hotter than Athens, Barcelona and Rome as temperatures soar amid easing of lockdown

Edinburgh is set to be warmer than Athens, Barcelona and Rome today as the Capital prepares to sizzle on the hottest day of the year.

Locals will experience temperatures of up to 24C later this afternoon with the city basking in glorious sunshine.

And the Athens of the North is set to be warmer than its Southern counterpart as the heat in the Greek capital peaks at a measly 22C on Friday.

The Met Office forecast for the Lothians and Borders states: “Bright and very warm or hot with plenty of sunshine, turning hazy at times due to high cloud. Cooler around some coasts with afternoon sea breezes. An isolated shower, mainly of the hills, may develop in the afternoon.”

It comes as Scotland moves into ‘phase one’ of easing lockdown restrictions as new guidelines mean you can now meet others outdoors.

Nicola Sturgeon said a maximum of eight people from two households may convene outside, though social distancing guidelines must still be observed.

However, the First Minister also strongly recommended locals do not meet with more than one household on the same day.

Temperatures are expected to soar across the country with Aviemore and Elgin in the north potentially reaching 29C.

But the country will still be some way off the record 32.9C recorded in the Borders in August 2003.
