Edinburgh Threipmuir Reservoir recovery extended into weekend as police search continues

Threipmuir reservoir is to remain closed over the weekend as police continue their recovery operation in the search for a man into the weekend.

Officers taped off the beauty spot to the public on Wednesday evening as emergency services raced to the scene near Balerno following reports of concern for a person in the water.

A rescue helicopter was deployed while fire crews also aided in the search, cordoning off all public areas in the meantime and urging locals to steer clear.

The missing man has not been identified, but police said his family were being kept “fully informed” about the progress of the operation.

However, the search is now set to continue across Saturday and Sunday as efforts to locate the man are redoubled.

Locals have been told to keep away from the area while the operation is ongoing.

Chief Inspector Scott Richardson said: “A recovery operation which has been being carried out at Thriepmuir Reservior near Balerno after a man was seen to get into difficulties in the water around 5.35pm on Wednesday, 14 July, remains ongoing.

“Emergency services have been conducting searches using both marine and land units and these will continue into the weekend. The man’s family are being kept fully informed.

“Threipmuir Resevior Car Park on Mansfield Road is to remain closed to the public in the coming days to allow for emergency service access, along with the footpath around the reservoir.

"We ask the public to avoid the area and thank you for your patience.”
