Edinburgh Tesco building revamp will see homes, shops, hotel and food and drink

Plans have been revealed for new apartments, shops and leisure facilities at a huge Tesco office block have been revealed.

The City of Edinburgh Council approved an early notification of planning on September 22 from the joint developers BDW Trading Limited & Tesco Personal Finance PLC.

Together they propose to renovate the Tesco Banking site at 2 South Gyle Crescent and create the new development.

The council advised that they must now liaise with the local community councils and thereafter a report on the community consultation must be submitted to the council with the planning application.

The proposal of application notice to the council advised that they would be applying for: “Residential, Offices, Retail, Financial, Professional and Other Services, Food & Drink, Non-Residential Institutions, Assembly and Leisure (Classes 1,2,3, 4, 10 ,11 and sui generis - flats).”

The City of Edinburgh Council previously heard a similar proposal, to create 328 apartments and a hotel, at the Tesco site in 2019.

A council spokesperson explained a little more about the plans.

They said: "The application site, covering an area of 3.66ha, lies west of South Gyle Crescent and south east of South Gyle Broadway, wrapping around the existing office building on the corner of the site. The site is mostly vacant except for a surface car park that formed part of a previous scheme in the middle of the site

".To the east is St Augustine's High School and Forrester High School and the Gyle shopping centre one mile to the west. The surrounding area is predominantly commercial in nature. There is existing residential to the north of the site and a recently completed residential development 0.2 miles to the west comprising of flats and houses."

The City of Edinburgh Council should receive a full planning application for the site in the coming weeks ahead.
