Edinburgh teen required surgery after play fighting with knife 'stolen from supermarket'

A fourteen-year-old boy required surgery after play fighting with a knife reportedly stolen from an Edinburgh supermarket.

Police were called to a Morrison's near West Granton Road on Monday afternoon in response to reports of a "stabbing".

As reported by the Daily Record, the injured teen was rushed to hospital for treatment, and although his injuries were said not to be life-threatening he required surgery on his hands.

Edinburgh Live reported on Tuesday how a boy had been "reported" to a Juvenile Liaison Officer in connection with an incident which left another teenager in hospital.

A section of the Waterfront Broadway in Granton was taped off by police as the boy was transferred to hospital for treatment.

A police source stated: “The boys were ‘toy fighting’ with knives allegedly taken from the supermarket.

They were mucking about sword fighting when one of the boys sustained a sore one on the hand.

“We responded after several panicked calls from shoppers over a ‘stabbing.’

“The boy was needing surgery but his injuries are not that serious.

They’ll also be spoken to by officers regarding their conduct and the allegations of theft.”

A witness added: “There was blood on the pavement so people started panicking it was much more serious than it was.

“It could have ended in real tragedy.

"Fourteen seems a bit old for play fighting.”
