Edinburgh students scolded by resident for midnight plunge into Union Canal

A local resident has blasted students from Edinburgh Napier University who jumped into the Union Canal last night.

The furious resident, who did not wish to be named, said they looked out of their windows shortly after midnight to see six students from nearby Bainfield university halls “bombing” into the canal.

Taking to social media she scolded the university, saying: “You might want to advise your Bainfield residents that jumping into the canal at the best of times isn't exactly a great idea let alone during a pandemic.”

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, she added: “Just so happened when I peered out the blinds about six students were bombing into the canal.

“Seems to happen every year at some point - it's normally when the weather is a lot colder for some reason.”

She said that local residents were fed up with student hijinks in the area, adding: “There was also naked rugby just before lockdown too.”

She said locals were ‘sick’ of inaction by the university, adding: “We've got a number to call for security but nothing really happens.

“The issue is that Napier do not care about local residents. When I called up security a few weeks ago they said something to the effect of "oh they've got nowhere else to go"

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Napier University said: “Students are regularly reminded of the high standards of conduct we expect from them, especially during this challenging period. We would invite the resident to raise their concerns with our accommodation team.”
