Edinburgh students occupy university in cuts protest

Anti-cuts students occupying Appleton Tower have launched a blog and Twitter account

University of Edinburgh students are preparing to occupy the university's Appleton Tower lecture theatre tonight in a cuts protest.

They have written a statement after a two hour meeting. They have set up working groups to get food and bedding into the building. A media working group has made a blog to broadcast updates.

They told me:

"We stand firm alongside all other students, university staff and others nationwide affected by education cuts and the risk this poses to the future of higher education. We are preparing for a long night. Our occupation as a democratic group are trying to bring in supplies. Security staff are letting Edinburgh uni students in. We urge any supporters to join us."

Earlier they used the blackboard, interactive whiteboard and PA system to debate whether to stay or go elsewhere. The Scottish parliament was mentioned but a majority of around 50 voted to stay overnight.

Earlier today they marched from Bristo Square to the local Liberal Democrats office where they held a sit-down protest.

They were told the doors will be locked by security at 7pm, so I'm going to head off. Police are still outside, along with some news crews. I've asked the students to report back in the morning on the Guardian Edinburgh blog.

They have also set up a dedicated Twitter account to broadcast from within the building.
