Edinburgh student urges others to 'boycott clubs' after her flatmate is 'spiked'

An Edinburgh student has urged others to boycott city nightclubs after claiming reports of spiking are not being taken seriously enough.

Martha Williams, a third year psychology and sociology student at the University of Edinburgh, started the campaign to boycott clubs in the city on October 28

Since launching the Instagram page, Girls Night Edinburgh the teen has gained over 4000 followers supporting the boycott.

The 21-year old came up with the passive activism after her flat mate was allegedly spiked at a venue in the city.

The original post reads: “Girls: boycott all Edinburgh nightclubs to demonstrate that we are NOT comfortable going out in Edinburgh as long as night clubs are enabling spiking.”

This post alone has over 4000 likes and hundreds of shares, since starting the page student societies and groups from over 30 different university cities across the country are involved including Dundee, Leeds, Glasgow and Durham.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live organiser Martha said: “I started it on my own and my flat mates have been helping me.

“On Sunday afternoon we made our first post and within 24 hours had over 2000 likes.

“I had never really heard about incidents of drink spiking in Edinburgh until it happened to my flatmate recently.

“That raised a red flag then I heard more and more reports of drink spiking in Edinburgh clubs.

“Every time we went out clubbing we were just miserable because we were so scared and paranoid.

“That inspired the boycott. I’m mostly upset about how bouncers have been speaking about the string of incidents, making casual comments about victim blaming.

“You’d hope they would take it seriously since it is their job to keep people safe.

“When we arranged it for a Thursday we had no idea how big it was going to be, we just arranged amongst friends for the day we were all free.

“But there are a lot of big club nights in Edinburgh on a Thursday including Rascals.

“We are still discussing what to do on Thursday but have some ideas and there is still a week to go.

“There are now over thirty groups involved at different universities including Cardiff, Liverpool, Swansea, Leeds, Glasgow, Exeter and Durham.

“We all have a group chat with the people who started each branch and all of the accounts have a prevalent following so it shows how important the issue is to so many people.”

The current plan is for women in Edinburgh, Glasgow and beyond to boycott nightclubs in protest of the lack of action and attention given to rising reports of drink spiking's in clubs.
