Edinburgh street view images show just how different city was 10 years ago

Edinburgh has been through many changes in the last decade, with many major developments.

From the huge St James Quarter shopping complex to a makeover at Tyncastle Park, to Spaces for People infrastructure.

But, how much have the most famous streets of Edinburgh changed in the last ten years?

Below is a list of famous places in Edinburgh that have changed a lot over ten years, with some much more than others.

Princes Street

Princes Street in 2011 wasn't a far shot off today's version. But, thanks to the pandemic, many shops on this street have closed. Topshop, and Topman, have since moved online with many others, including Debenhams, also closing.

Tynecastle Park, home of Heart of Midlothian Football Club

Home of Scottish Premiership team Heart of Midlothian, Tynecastle Park has gone under some really major developments since 2008.

It's new look is modern, sleek and that of a professional football team in the 2020's.

Haymarket Train Station

Haymarket in 2011 was completely unrecognisable to the contemporary station we see today.

It was a maze of construction and hard hats a decade ago.

Haymarket now has the looks to compete with the other sleek stations in the UK.

Royal Mile

The Royal Mile has not changed much on first glance over a decade. However, thanks to COVID, many shops have been closed for months on end, and the street is quieter than ever.

The Royal Mile in 2021 is more similar than the other streets, but would be a lot busier if the pandemic wasn't a thing.

Grassmarket

Just down from the famous Victoria Street, the Grassmarket has become a bouncing street full of nightlife thanks to its proximity to various Edinburgh nightclubs.

It looks extremely similar in these photos, but the Grassmarket is usually bustling with many people through for the annual Fringe Festival.

We will have to wait and see if the ever-popular festival goes ahead this year.

So, although the capital has undergone many different developments over the last decade, the city always strives for bigger and better than before.

It will be exciting to see how Edinburgh changes in a years time, or even another ten!
