Edinburgh statue of Robert Dundas latest to be targeted with anti-slavery graffiti

An Edinburgh statue has been targeted with anti-slavery graffiti.

Robert Dundas, 2nd Viscount Melville, has been branded 'son of slavery' and a 'colonialist profiter'.

Statues with connections to slavers have been targeted across the UK following huge Black Lives Matters rallies.

It is believed the monument was attacked due to Robert being the son of Henry Dundas who deliberately delayed the abolition of slavery to protect the elite.

Robert who was born in 1771, was an MP for Midlothian and Keeper of the Signet.

The protests come after the death of George Floyd in America sparked a huge anti-racism movement when a white police officer knelt on his neck as he lay on the pavement for nearly nine minutes.

Author Paul Pender took to Twitter to share the damage of the Edinburgh statue which also has George Floyd's name sprayed on it.

He said: "Live from Edinburgh, Scotland, where this statue and others are under threat as they were erected to honour the slave-owning Dundas (aka Melville) dynasty.

"That's Robert Melville the son of Henry Melville, our father Henry Dundas.

"His dad was known as Henry the 9th and ran Scotland for a long time, and not in a very nice way in my opinion.

"I don't know what you make of this, yesterday this was a pristine statue... now its some would say 'defaced' but some would say the 'truth is out there'.

"You can see all four sides of it."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware on Tuesday, 9 June, 2020, of grafiti on a statue in St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
