Edinburgh St James Quarter evacuated again as shoppers spotted in the street

Edinburgh's new St James Quarter has been evacuated once again after a number of alarms were sounded on Saturday morning.

Shoppers were quickly shifted out of the brand new retail complex, with crowds seen waiting to get back inside and out of the damp and dreary weather.

Since its opening in June 2021, the centre has seen hundreds of visitors evacuated from the premises, with false alarms sounding on numerous occasions.

In the last month, customers have reported the alarms becoming a regular occurrence, with the false evacuations beginning just days after the quarter opened.

Currently it is unclear what is causing the false alarms, however last week, diners at the new Bonnie and Wild food hall told Edinburgh Live they had been evacuated twice from the building over just a few hours as they tried to enjoy their meal.

It is not the first teething issue the centre has faced since opening, with shoppers spotting a cracked glass ceiling panel just days after opening their doors.

Damage was also noted by visitors after freak flash flooding on July 4 saw a huge plume of water continuing to cascade from an open ceiling feature down into the basement below.

The extreme thunderstorm was caught on camera as staff working in the Boots store below worked continuously to keep the water from flooding the brand new store.

A spokesperson for St James Quarter, said: "The Safety of our visitors and staff is our number one priority. Following a fire alarm in one of our retailers, St James Quarter was temporarily evacuated. We are now open as normal."
