Empire Bingo in Edinburgh set to become new Wetherspoons superpub as drinks giant has permit approved

In today's Edinburgh Council Licensing Board Meeting (Monday 29th April), it has been revealed that JD Wetherspoons have had a permit approved to open their next Edinburgh venue in a former Bingo Hall on Nicolson Street.

The pub chain currently has six venues across central Edinburgh located on George Street (times two), Lothian Road (in the former HMV Picturehouse), Waverley Bridge, Leith Walk and in the Omni Centre.

The Nicolson Street branch sees a £1.5 million plan to convert the Empire Bingo venue into a two-storey Spoons, covering an area of more than 4000 sq ft and will create more than 50 jobs .

The new superpub will sit just minutes from the University of Edinburgh ’s George Square campus.

Local democracy reporter David Bol confirmed the planning permission on Twitter:

The news reports that Wetherspoon's are closing around 20 pubs elsewhere including the historic Cross Keys pub in Peebles.

We currently don't know when the pub is set open as it is not on Wetherspoon's website - we will bring you this news as it comes in.
