Edinburgh son's plan to care for dad may be in jeopardy due to fuel crisis

An Edinburgh man who is driving to Brighton this week to care for his unwell dad is afraid he may not get there or back due to the current fuel crisis.

Michael Ulloa, from Edinburgh, is due to travel to England later this week but has voiced his concern over getting there or back to the city if there is a further fuel shortage.

Michael's dad took not well a few years ago and due to his mum going away for the week, he is visiting to make sure his dad is well looked after.

"My dad had a stroke a few years ago so needs someone in the house with him to prepare meals and ensure he doesn't fall or forget to turn things off," he said.

"If I set off, will I be able to fill up on fuel to get back?."

This is the question for many travellers across the city who now face uncertainty over long trips, especially to England, as fuel to get to and from their destination may not be available and if it is, they could face hour-long queue's to fill up.

Over the past week, people have been recreating the pre-Covid 'panic buying' pattern, but with fuel. As soon as a possible shortage is announced, people in their hundreds have flocked to fuel garages all over the UK to refill before it's too late.

In Edinburgh, there have been longer queue's at petrol stations than normal, but nothing near the extremes of the rest of the UK.

There were, however, problems for people on the outskirts of the city. One mum told Edinburgh Live that she had tried to refill her car at two garages in the Broxburn and Winchburgh and after having no luck, she had to travel to South Queensferry.

In a similar situation to Michael, the woman needed her care to transport her autistic daughter to school, as well as to care for her mother who had MS.

Continued uncertainty lingers over people in positions such as these, who face not being able to carry out their caring duties for loved ones, if the problem surrounding fuel persists any longer.
