Edinburgh SNP election leaflet gaffe as candidate mistakes capital for Midlothian

An SNP issued by Edinburgh candidate Ash Denham mistook the capital for Midlothian, quoting incorrect figures.

In the leaflet, which has a picture of Nicola Sturgeon, the party sets out a list of achievements it has secured for voters in Denham's constituency.

But the leaflet incorrectly mentions Midlothian, despite the fact Denham has served as the area's MSP since 2016.

For the first achievement, the leaflet reads: "An estimated 7,500 children in 4,300 families across Midlothian are expected to benefit from the Scottish Government's ground breaking anti-poverty Scottish child payment."

A Scottish Labour insider told Edinburgh Live: "Ash Denham can be forgiven because she doesn't know the area very well. But it's encouraging that the SNP has adopted Labour's policy to double the Scottish Child Payment.

"It's only a shame it took an election for the SNP to talk about how to address child poverty."

An SNP spokesperson said: "Ms Denham is happy to clarify that 17,500 children across Edinburgh will benefit from the Scottish Government's game-changing child payment."

Ms Denham has been criticised previously for opting to live outside the constituency, and she faced an internal battle for the SNP nomination after being challenged by local members.
